Campus Recreation, Intramurals, and Wellness Policies (HRC)

To ensure the safety of members and guests, the Office of Recreation and Wellness maintains the policies related to the use of the Health and Recreation Complex (HRC). Violators of the policies outlined will be subject to disciplinary action and may be asked to leave the facility immediately. Violators who cause any damage to the facility may be billed. The use of the HRC is considered a privilege. Individuals not complying with the established policies and procedures may be asked to leave the facility and/or are subject to disciplinary procedures.

The Office of Recreation and Wellnes staff reserve the right to interpret these regulations to best serve the needs of patrons.

Discrimination and Harassment Policy

Sexual, ethnic or any type of discrimination and/or harassment of any patron or employee will not be tolerated. Suspension or revocation of recreation facilities and program usage may be applied to suspected violators. Further action through the Butler University disciplinary system and necessary federal, state, and municipal law may be taken.

Facility Policies

1. Proper identification (valid Butler Student ID, Faculty/Staff ID, Alumni RecWell ID, and Additional Household RecWell ID) must be shown when entering throught the control desk gates. Sharing of valid physical or electronic copy is not permitted and will be subject to Butler University disciplinary procedures.

2. Close-toed athletic shoes must be worn in the facility except in designated spaces or specific fitness classes or programming. All tops must cover the entire chest, and shorts or pants must cover the entire groin and buttocks through all ranges of motion.

3. Use of the Recreation and Wellness facilities for monetary gain is not permitted. Personal training (individual or group) is only allowed by Recreation and Wellness employees.

4. No food is allowed in the recreation areas of the HRC. All liquids must be in a container with a screw on lid. Glass containers are not permitted in the recreation areas of the HRC.

5. Disrespectful or abusive lanuage will not be tolerated.

6. Abuse of property will not be tolerated, and damage caused may be billed to the individual.

7. The Office of Recreation and Wellness and the University are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please leave valuables at home or be sure to secure them in a locker.

8. Any group of 5 or more people that would like to use a specific area of the HRC, including the group fitness space, must make a request to the Office of Recreation and Wellness.

9. No pets other than service animals and those approved by the Office of Disability Services or Recreation and Wellness special programming are allowed inside Recreation and Wellness spaces of the HRC.

10. Alchohol and drug use is prohibited in the Recreation and Wellness facilities and programs. Violators will be subject to Butler University’s disciplinary procedures and any federal, state, and municipal law procedures.

11. Smoking, vaping, e-cigarettes, or smokeless tobacco are not permitted anywhere in the facility, or within 20 feet outside of the facility.

12. Any sort of weapon, including, but not limited to martial arts weapons, guns, knives, or any other sharp device that could be used as a weapon, are prohibited in the HRC or any Recreation and Wellness programs. Violators will be subject to Butler University’s disciplinary procedures and any federal, state, and municipal law procedures.

13. Any martial arts practices or contact sparring must be approved by the Office of Recreation and Wellness.

14. The following sports are not allowed in the HRC as informal activites: Indoor soccer (unless played as an Intramural Sport), Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee (except for Intramural Sports or Club Sports), Baseball, Softball, Floor Hockey, any martial arts that allows for unsupervised use of implements, or other activities that require specific on-site supervisors.

Designated Areas Policies

Fitness Area

1. Wipe down equipment after use with wipes throughout the facility.

2. Re-rack all weights, barbells, and dumbbells and make sure all other fitness equipment is replaced to their proper storage locations.

3. No dropping weight plates or dumbbells in the facility, unless dropping on the Olympic lifting platform. All Olympic lifts must be done on the platforms and with bumper plates. No black non-bumper plates are allowed on the platforms.

4. It is highly recommended that lifters use a spotter for all pressing or squatting movements.

5. Collars are required when using equipment on the squat rack, the bench press, or any other machines that require weight plates to be added.

6. Throwing medicine balls against the walls or floor is prohibited unless using the cloth Dynamex medicine balls in the zone space on the matted area.

7. Usage of barbells and weight plates are prohibited in the two fitness studios adjacent to the lower-level lifting area and basketball courts.

8. Walkways should always remain clear. Stretching and other activities should be done in functional training areas.

Track Area

1. The track direction changes daily. Follow the signs for the appropriate direction.

2. Stretching and warm-up exercises are to occur in the stretching areas.

3. For safety reasons, standing on the track to view other recreational activities is prohibited.

4. The inside lane is for walking. The middle lane is for jogging. The outside lane is for running. The courtesy rule of passing is recommended. Joggers/runners should alert others before making a pass.

5. To ensure participant’s safety and injury prevention, boxing, heavy bag, or MMA gloves must be worn while hitting the heavy bag.

6. Strollers are not permitted.

Open Recreation

1. Dunking, grabbing, or hanging on rims or nets is not permitted. Violators may be asked to leave at the Recreation and Wellness staff’s discretion.

2. Kicking or throwing of a basketball and/or other equipment towards the ceiling and/or track is not permitted.

3. Spitting on the floor is prohibited.

4. Only non-marking closed-toed athletic shoes will be allowed unless you are a spectator.

5. Personal speakers are prohibited to maintain a comfortable environment for all guests. Please use headphones or earbuds when listening to music or other audio.

Locker Rooms

The HRC has designated men’s and women’s locker rooms and two gender neutral/family changing rooms.

1. All day lockers are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Day lockers can be checked out at no cost at the Control Desk.

2. Day lockers will be cleaned out each night. Removed items will be placed in Lost & Found.

3. The Office of Recreation & Wellness is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged personal items.

4. To respect the privacy of everyone using the locker rooms, the use of cameras for photos or videos is prohibited, and cell phone usage is discouraged.

5. Recreation staff reserves the right to check lockers for safety/security concerns. Users will be notified should this occur.

Aquatic Center Policies

1. Lifeguards have the authority to enforce discretioinary rules based on individual situations.

2. Swimming is prohibited withour an Office of Recreation and Wellness Lifeguard.

3. Shorts or swimsuits must be worn to utilize the pool, sauna, and spa.

4. Dispose of gum, food, or drink before entering the Aquatic Center.

5. No running, diving, dunking, or rough play. Playing on or around ladders, railings, and drains is prohibited.

Leisure Pool

1. No hanging or dunking on the rim or net of the basketball hoop.

2. Do not sit, stand, walk, or climb on any blue tiling.

Spa

1. Users must be 16 years of age or older to utilize the spa.

2. Shorts or swimsuits must be worn to utilize the spa.

Sauna

1. Users must be 16 years of age or older to utilize the sauna.

2. Shorts, pants, or swimsuits must be worn to utilize the sauna.

3. Do not pour water on the rocks. The sauna is an electrial appliance and water will damage the heater.

4. Maximum Sauna Use: 30 minutes

Dependent Child Policy

Any children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents or guardians are expected to be able to provide adequate supervision at all times.

1. Children under 16 years old may not use the spa, sauna, exercise spaces or equipment, or participate in group fitness classes.

2. Children under 8 must be in the direct care of their parent or guardian while in the facility or participating in programs.

3. Children 8-15 years old must be in the same activity space supervised by the parent or guardian.

4. Unsafe or inappropriate behavior will result in the child being asked to leave the activity area.

5. Children 5 and under may enter the opposite gender locker room with their parents. Children 6 and over are allowed in the same gender locker rooms. We encourage parents with children to utilize our gender neutral/family changing rooms adjacent to the Aquatic Center.
